Also, this will vary by manufacturer, so a 235 tire may fit in one instance and only a 225 in another instance.
Just as an example, on one of my Mercedes I have a 315 wide tire running on an 8" wide rim. This is the preferred setup, so it's not like I am pushing it to do this. (If this sounds weird to you, then you should quickly understand that without more information, things taken out of context can appear strange.)

Bridgestone S02 235/40R18 should NOT be mounted to 7.5" rim.
Dunlop SP9000 235/40R18 should NOT be mounted to 7.5" rim.
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 235/40R18 should NOT be mounted to 7.5" rim.
Kumho Ecsta MX 235/40R18 should NOT be mounted to 7.5" rim.
Michelin Pilot Sport, Pirelli PZero Rosso, Yokohama AVS Sport, and the list goes on... are recommended against mounting on 7.5" rim.
So I am not sure what brand YOU think will fit properly. Can you help me out and let me know? Thanks!
