touch shift

Does anyone use the touch shift, if that is what it is called. I dont think it is very responsive, unless mine is bad. If not then I guess I will just put it in S.

do you mean tiptronic?

i use mine alot... it is not as responsive on my 00 clk430 as it was on my 01 c230k coupe but i guess the software is older. it is still beter than most auto boxes.

I believe the new amg boxes are much better although from what a friend at audi told be the new dual clutch tt box wipe the floor with all others inc bmw and ferrari!

- does anyone know why the box shiftsa up at rev limit in 3+4 but not oin 1 and 2 or is mine faulty... my c coupe shifted up in all gears?

Its called Touch Shift. I have an 01 CLK. The touch shift on my car is very responsive, but I myself dont see a point to it at all. I never use the touch shift feature. If the CLK was avaliable in manual transmission, i would have purchased it. I just never cared for the Touch Shift feature.

I don't use it much for "spirited" driving 'cause it is kinda slow. Where it works great is in stop-and-go traffic. Holds the gear and engine brakes. I have over 40K miles and still 50% to go on origional brake pads.

I use it in San Francisco, for just "coasting" downhill. I probably should just use the brakes but what the hell.

I use tiptronic when I'm stuck in traffic, put it in second or third gear so I don't have to brake as much. Downshift to slow down prevents brake dust as well. I use it quite a bit, but it doesn't switch too fast.

I use it alot too. Mostly in traffic as well, but i use it alot when i want to downshift, to punch it like on a highway. Also like lowryder said, less braking=less brake dust on the rims.

You basically have to time how long it takes to shift at different levels of acceleration in order to maximize shifting points. It will never feel very responsive, it's a Mercedes automatic.

Thumbs up

I use it a lot downshifting to stop, like Bruce said, it helps to prevent brake dust as well as it feels kind of sport like downshifting with a manual transmission.

BUT...

wouldn't downshifting theoretically cause more wear and tear to the engine and tranny? I'd rather have my brakes changed more often and clean my rims....

With tiptronic i'm able to reach a much faster speed in first and second gear that i would if i allowd the transmission to do it automatically. Timing is essential though especially between 1st and 2nd . After all it's your car you should master it.

true but...

I have to pay to replace brakes and rotors. MB pays to replace the engine/tranny.
