gotch

my wife drives a 2006 clk 350 w/ 19,000 miles. last week the engine started making a distinctive "whirring" noise that gets louder with increasing rpms. i don't notice any difference in performance...runs fine as always. the wierd thing is that someone in my neighborhood had a an R350 that made the exact same noise. i used to wonder, "what the heck is wrong with that car"? now i've got the same problem! any thoughts?
