Cracked windshield & price
I took a rock to my windshield last night in about 25F weather and now have a lovely crack all the way across the windshield. I just got off the phone with the dealer and is quoting me a price of:
$378 for the shield
$58 for the seal
$75 labor
$511 Total
Does this sound reasonable? Relative to the price of the car I didn't think it was too bad, but just wanted to check!
Thank you!

You dont have to goto the dealer to get a new windshield. I had a windshield replaced on an Audi before and it was roughly around $200. The place I went to specifically does windows of all sorts, not just windshields for cars.

I called the dealer back and get this...they farm it out to another auto glass place and when they return it to the dealership they then reset the rain sensor! I would prefer an OE windshield, but am going to call the auto glass place and see what they charge, especially if it is going back to the dealer to have the rain sensor reset anyway.

I had the windshield replaced by Safelite Glass Corp. They offered two options; OEM or Safelite brand. The OEM, with rain sensor, was $420 installed. The Safelite band, with rain sensor, was about $275.
I went for the OEM, but if I had to do it again, I would get the Safelite brand.
They are on the web. They are a big organization, and are all over the country. They came to the parking lot at my company.

I have used Safelite in the past (not for the CLK) and they are really good. What about the Mercedes Sticker (seal) on the lower passenger side of the winshield. Does that come with the OEM winshield or is that something the dealer has to put on? Don't forget, you can turn this into your insurance and there should be no increase in your policy since it is considered comprehensive.

waterford, even on an OE windshield, the dealer still has to put the decal on. The local dealer said they keep a supply of them on hand.

Insurance will go up
I had a cracked windshield two days after I got my car. At the time, since there were no windshields for these cars readily available, about 300 in the world, I had to pay 1000 for mine.... and i shopped around. I turned it into insurance thinking the same thing, my premium wouldn't be affected....don't believe that. The insurance representative even told me it would affect my premium...it did, and it does. Won't be a lot but it will be affected and it will go up, just wait. Absolutely everything you claim follows you for up to 5 years whether it's comprehensive or collision. Just beware, and do your homework if you are concerned about your insurance policy/record.

Windshield
The price quoted is very reasonable, $75 for labor is quite cheap considering how long it takes to put in a windshield properly. My dealer actually has one or two techs qualified to do the work and they are great. Bear in mind that the CLK 320 has a neutral tinted glass while the CLK 430 and 55 have a blue tint. As far as the sticker is concerned the one that comes on new cars says: "A Mercedes-Benz Product". Most parts departments have ones that say "A Daimler-Benz Product". The correct part number is either 129 584 08 38 or 6550 0384 96, I'm not sure which since both are on the sticker.

I am facing a similar situation. I just got my 01 430 about a month ago. There was a rather large chip in my direct line of vision, that the dealer promised to take care of. The car is otherwise in outstanding condition. I was also told that these kind of jobs are out-sourced. A week later he sends Glass-Man out to my house. He took one look at it, and told me..."It's already been repaired. It won't get any worse, but there's nothing I can do." I asked the dealer if they could replace the wind shield for me, and he was supposed to call another place. Now, three weeks later and still no action. The salesman keeps promising to call me back, but never does. I'm starting to get pissed.
I stopped by Keystone Auto Glass, and was quoted exactly $511, same as you. I have the rain-sensing option. I'm sure they can do this at the dealer body shop, but they will out-source it, if it will save them a few bucks. My salesman is trying my patience. I'm going to tell him that I plan on getting it fixed wheather they pay for it or not, but if they blow me off they have lost my business forever. Sorry, just venting...
BTW, my car was StarMarked just before I bought it. I'm surprised they considered a chip like that acceptable, even if it was repaired.

Not acceptable!
A chip "IN THE LINE OF SITE" is NOT acceptable and you should let your dealer (not the utz salesman) know that! Esspecially on a "Starmarked" car. If it's Starmarked, it's supposed to be as close to perfect as you can get in a used car. Service is what Starmark is ALL about. If it's been three weeks, start yelping like a kicked dog to anyone who will listen. All of you guys shopping these 3rd party glass companies need to make sure that they know that you yourself may be paying for the job. You will find that on 99% of the dealers, the price comes down if your paying for it yourself. I just replaced the glass in my ex'97 BMW 740iL (Dealer wanted, well...) Safelite wanted $530 for OEM, When I told them that my deductable was $1000 on that car, the price dropped "miraculously to $380. Hope this helps someone...

Deductible
In New York, window glass is a separate, optional, part of comprehensive coverage. I know that in my case the window glass claim carried a zero deductible.

Logic behind ded
Lucas - $1000 deductible is logical BECAUSE the only reason I have ANY insurance is to cover the "Big stuff" like a major collision. I drive aggressive but smart and have never been in an accident of my own cause (Did have a guy in a pickup trunk rearend me one time for about $700 in damages). No tickets and my insurance for this car is just under $700 a YEAR. That's about $300 less a year than you guys are probably paying for the same 100/300 coverage. In my mind, I wouldn't carry insurance at all (i.e. become self insured) but with this car, I really don't want to shell out $50K should I "happen" to experience my first accident "at fault". Unfortunately, the glass on my BMW was NOT covered in this state

I too have a $1,000 deductible and have had no accidents in 22 years. The money I have saved during this time by having a higher deductible could have paid for a few new cars. Over the past 22 years of driving I have never asked my insurance provider to give me even $1 in return. The difference between a zero and $1000 deductible is way more than anything I've had to claim in my case. I could also have my insurance cover my windshield, but this is the first time in my driving history I've had a broken windshield and it is not worth the extra expense for a $500 item. My belief is also that insurance is for the "low probability" "high catastrophic" occurance...$1,000 deductible, to me, makes nothing but sense.
Just my $.02

Just got off the phone with Safelite
It's funny how I got a crak this morning and I find this topic at mbworld. In any case, since my crack is bigger than the length of a dollar bill, my windshield needs to be replaced.
They quoted me $358 including tax, they would come at my job and do it. He asked me however if I want the "black tint" or the blue one. I told him I have a '99 CLK which I don't think comes with the blue tint so I have either no tint or black. He said that the black is "more luxurious". Any enlightment will be appreciated.
