Euro '55 engine bay - different to USA ?

Euro '55 engine bay - different to USA ?
Attached is an (old) picture of my CLK55 engine bay with the engine cover removed (just pulls off)

Note in the middle at the front theres an empty bit, on my SL500 theres a pump there (big black pump, looks like an alternator)

I beleieve that is something to do with emissions, and want to know whether you in the US have the pump there.

air pump
Richard:

My US E55 engine has that air pump which I believe is an emission equipment. It is usually on after cold engine start.
