I've been changing the filter and Mobil 1 0W-40 every 5,000 miles, which turns out to be every 12 months.
However, it was observed that engine oil samples collected from fleet vehicles after 12,000 mile drain interval showed 10-15 % lower friction and more importantly, an order of magnitude lower wear rate than those of fresh oils.

I'm not surprised. On some cars I've stretched intervals to 8K or even 10K with no ill effect. I've racked up 170,000 miles on the original engine, and tranny of my grand am going by this interval. The only thing that hasn't worn out or broken has been the engine. Still runs solid, and fires up every time.
