Got a ticket
Today after school I was driving home at my own average speed 70mph w/ Passport 8500 on, all the sudden I see a police motorcycle, then the radar detector went on. I thought the Escort Passport 8500 works well most of the time, now I can't trust the radar detector anymore. The cop was nice and he showed me the radar gun, he was 770ft from me when he shot me using the radar gun. This probly ganna be about $350. Thinking about selling the Passport 8500 and get a real COP detector. I know some of you would recommend me to get the V1, but I don't think the V1 would work better if I had it, because after all those radar detectors are still not a cop detector, and they cannot 100% garrantee that you won't get a ticket. Anybody know where I can get a cop detector? Thanks
P.S. my passport 8500 is 1 month old.

There are police scanners on the market, but all of them are illegal in CA. The reason why your radar detector did not save you is probably because many motor cycle cops do not just sit there with the gun on. Instead, they wait until they see you, aim and shoot. Doing so eliminates any chance you may have of being warned.

Sorry about your first ticket. How many tickets did the 8500 prevent?
A couple of posts alerted you to a couple of dangers:
1/13/2 I wrote in response to one of your questions:
3.) How far can it detect and is it both front and back?
This depends on the
type of radar emittet. Read the brochure and the website talks about
sensitivity re the tests. Instant on/off radar usually gives you the shortest
time to respond. (i.e. dig a hole and vanish!!)
1/21/2 Flashman wrote in your thread:
2. Detecting Police -- A lot of police only turn on radar unit when actively using
it. Others drive around with it turned on. The unit only detects the radar when it
use, not that they have one. However, be aware that most police units will also
pace you or watch you from a high vantage point with a stopwatch and catch
you without radar (this is known as VASCAR). Always keep your eye on your rear
view mirror and watch for those 'measuring' white strips on the road that cops
use for VASCAR readings.

Hmm.
Lowrydr, if he showed you something with a measurement, than it was a LIDAR (Laser), not a radar. And all Lidar's are instant on, not continuous. What i believe you are referring to as a cop detector is the old Chipsdetector that was marketed specifically in your state back through the late seventies and early eighties. A neatly marketed product that worked very well. All it was was a scanner specifically scanning the repeater packs on the two way radios for most police agencies in your states. Back then the Police hand held radios actually were frequencied to a specific radio in the trunk for local pickup and than transmitted through a high power radio in the trunk to the towers. They were on two completely different bands (ie: one on VHF and the other on UHF). When you came into the area and the repeater pak (Ratpak) was actively polling for a policeman's handheld you were warned of a cop in the area. Not that they were using radar or lidar, but that they were simply in the area (Usually 3/4 mile radius). The problem in modern days for you is that most larger police agencies in your State have converted to a 800Mhz analog or digital radio and no longer have ratpaks in the cars. Therefore a chipsdetector would only work with those agencies who still you the old style radio system. Hope this answers at least one of your questions.

sorry to hear that low. i personally think you should just save your money. most of the time when they get you w/ radar, your detector is too late. i think you should just be wary of the route you take everyday. know the road and where the speed traps are. dont every speed when there is no traffic either. the other cars my make it harder for them to get you w/ radar. and btw, i think your ride is tight, stop hating on people fast eddy, cuz fines are determined by the mph over the speed limit.

Hey LowRydeR!
Sorry to hear about that ticket! Really sucks! But i don't think it should cost that much. I got a ticket about 8 mos ago and the whole thing cost me w/ driving school about $120.00. But i guess it depends on the location??

LowRydeR,
Sorry to hear about your ticket.
On the topic of cops and tickets, I met a cop at my barber shop who was telling me starting this year (january 2002) in California, that fix-it tickets go on your record as 1/2 point.
Can anyone validate this?

The best defence is a strong offense. That is your driving style and your eyes. Never be the sole sheep outside the pack, let other cars go ahead. When approaching corners or hills, watch for brake lights far ahead (indicating other people are slowing down when they see a cop). Watch your rear view mirror like a hawk. Forget about leisure driving, this is active detection prevention. You are the pilot of a 3,000+ lb beast and your job to to be alert, scan far ahead, scan behind, choose 'pansy' cars to get behind, make calculated moves.
These techniques work. 6 years driving a RED miata with twin 8" yellow racing stripes, averaging 20-30 over any given speed limit, and not stopped once. The addition of my Passport 8500 is an additional tool, not insurance or guarantee.
Driving fast is dangerous and illegal. So if you are going to go faster than the posted speed limit, you need to be careful, alert, safe, and cautious. Personally I think that people who get stopped for speeding deserved to get stopped for speeding, because it usually indicates they were not being cautious or alert enough to be driving at those speeds.

Even the most advanced radar detectors arent 100% effective. If a cop points and shoots at your car, hes already got your speed and if your radar goes off, its still too late. My radar has saved me many times, and never got a ticket. I got pulled over twice with my radar on, but just recieved warnings

I have had my V1 in my 2000 Corvette and now my CLK. I swear by it. It has saved me well before I even see the black and white. Dump the "Passport" to a ticket and get the V1.

Driving MB at 55-60mph ALL the time is like raping it and should be punishable somehow.
People drive DANGEROUSLy everyday even at 20mph, cut in front, do not use blinkers, do not keep distance, run red lights, drink and drive.
Taking MBenz to a speed limit can be and is much safer on an open road with little/no traffic then in the examples I gave you above.

Bruce, yes you'll be paying around $300-$350 for the ticket w/ traffic school since you're in Orange County.

The k40 radar dector/descrambler, will pay for you speeding ticket if you were caught on radar. I think the system is about 500 and it is totally integrated and hidden in your car.

Too bad u got that ticket. Seems like the idiots driving too slow cause more accidents than people "speeding" as in your case and they never get tickets. (Btw, how much over the speed limit were you?)
Here is what the "Law" says re: Radar & Speeding
