I am getting some new rims and tires and I was just wondering if people take their clks to chain wheel shops like Firestone or Town Fair Tire, or is it better to go to a specialist?

Bought a set of Michelins at TownFair, which included a free alignment.
Recall that only did the fronts were done and got a detailed before and after computer printout.
Two years later, the tire wear has been very even.

If you're getting wheels and tires and not changing the suspension geometry, there's no reason to align the car.
That said, I prefer the dealer (gasp) or an alignment/Mercedes indy.

My car needs an alignment bad so I figured this was a good time to get it done, also my mechanic told me that at some point someone ground down the rear tierod for some reason. So I don't know if that's contributing to the poor alignment.

I went to MB for a $200 alignment and I has a $100 coupon. they gave me a loaner. I went on my way thinking I was going to have a bill for $100 at the end of the day. The service mgr called me mid day to say, "you have a valve cover gasket leaking, the front control arm bushings are shot and your fuel filter needs to be changed for only $1100." I said "the car only has 31K miles on it. Who are you trying to bull****." I went to an indy.
