ALL unofficial photos are disappointing, including the proposed anemic initial power availability.
I reserve actual design judgement re new 2003 till I see it in 3D, knowing that initial engine offering will be insufficient HPs & torque. :o

The W208 (current body) has very organic / curvy shapes with the side windows and with the continous arc of the windscreen/roof/back light that really comes together nicely.

the proposed W209 breaks away from that with the straight bottom edge of the side glass and the more pointed rear 1/4 window. Its like having a shrunken version of the CL - why??
I don't think this was a great move on the styling front.
Pillarless styling would be fine (just integrate the front belts a la SL style into the front seats), but like other's comments - I don't want Acura styling by Mercedes...especially with flat slab sides.
I do like the front... they should have stayed with current body styling cues with front end and rear end modified..
I agree with some of you to make the judgement until I see the car in 3D live....

-As I discussed with a friend the other day, even though the W208 and the W210 have the same styling cues, this new generation is where they have finally split. The W211 retains the much-loved E styling combined with cues from the S/C/CL/SL, and when the official pictures came out from DCX, I liked them very much. Mercedes did an excellent job with the new E-Class, and I only wish I was old enough to buy one. The W209 on the other hand, is also pursuing the design of the S/CL...but maybe a little too much. I understand the decision to move the new CLK to a pillarless design, but the effect they have created (so far anyway) is that of a $50K CL. Right now, it's not working so well. And even without that consideration...the W208 with the traditional cues has a much cleaner design than the roundness of the "modern" W209. IMO.
-A friend of mine (and member of this board as well) has a 2000 designo espresso CLK320 on 19s. I got to look at it, and drive in it, and the CLK is an awesome vehicle. There is something in the current design that just pulls me in. Up to this point, I confess I'm quite disappointed with the W209.
If you look at some of the spy shots of the CLK from different angles, the rear of the new CLK actually appears disproportionally narrow, making the car seem awkwardly long. I also don't like the fused headlights. I think separate headlights like the new E-class or CL-class is more classic and elegant.
MB may be able to add more gadgets to the new CLK. But, it will be difficult to ever outdo the body style of the current CLK.
In other spy photos, the new CLK headlights appear more like single units, just like the current C-class. Without the official photos from MB, it is difficult to tell whether the new CLK headlights will be more like the new SL or the current C.
But, what I mean when I say the headlights are fused is that the metal part of the body does not divide the headlights.

The official unveiling is at the Geneva show, March 5-17, so the official pics should be on the M-B international website about a week before that.
I hope that the pix in the Italian magazine are in error.
MB's effort to create a family design homogeneousness, appears to link the new CLK too much to the C coupe & C class stylistically, which cheapens it and lessens its desirablility. :o
Well, in a couple of weeks the mystique/speculation re appearance will be gone with the release of the OFFICIAL CLK pix by MB.

However, the guessing game re engine type destined for the USA will continue for a while.

This is the same car I saw at the factory in December. Check the DC homepage as well. The main pic is now on their corporate site.
Hold on to to your W208's!
