Sound system question from new owner
I just bought a '99 CLK430 and I'd like an in-dash CD unit.
I understand there are serious issues in adding aftermarket components because of the fiber optics involved in the factory system.
I've heard many stories from different shops in my area, ranging from "just buy a new head unit" to "replace EVERYTHING".
So, can someone enlighten me here? I don't need to break windows with huge sound, I just want a decent in-dash CD solution.
Thanks,
-Greg
The fibre optics cable exists ONLY IF you have a factory CD changer. If you dont, there's nothing that you have to worry about. I'd a CLK430 for 2 yrs.
Changing the head unit is the same as changing any head units for any car. If you only want an in-dash CD just for the sake of having an in-dash CD player and you dont care much on sound quality, then it will be a simple job. However, if you want to have better sound, you'll probably come across a few problems: a) you have to get a decent amplifier to cope with yr head unit; b) after u've got a decent amplifier, you'll have to change the speakers cause the speakers will not be able to handle yr aftermarket head unit & amplifier.
I know its kind of a chain reaction. Really think through what you want first before buying anything. Sound is something that you'll get used to. After a while, you'll start upgrading stuff.
Good luck!!!

After some research, I've changed plans slightly.
I'll still be replacing the factory head unit, so the new amp/ speaker issues still applies. Instead of a CD unit, I bought a Rio Car.
