Air Mass Sensor Again!

Took my baby out last night to stretch her legs and was shocked when the speed idled at just over 240 kph. I thought NAAAA it must be a brezzy night with alot of head wind! Then i realised something was not right when i noticed the RPM needle pass the 5000 mark!

It usually tops at just over 250 kph with the RPM needle idle at 5000 EXACTLY.

Took her in to the dealers this morning an guess what? The air mass sensor is faulty again. This is the third time i replace it and they keep blaming the problem on the K&N cone filter!

Here's pic...

............Yes, I actually just had this same conversation with the master mechanic at MB autowerks here in Atlanta. It appears K&N filters are so oily that they damage your air mass sensor. With such little gains if at all in HP and the availability of other brands, it may be unwise to use K&N filters in your MB.

Take out your K&N when you go to the dealer, I hate when they blame everything on the intake.

Is this only a problem with cone filters and not element replacement filters?

Mass air sensors are a very well known problem on MBZ's. MB Tech 208 has commented that he has had defective ones right out of the box. I don't know about the K&N issue but it does make some sense.

Are you kidding? My mechanic only charged me $215 to replace my mass air meter. While he is my friend and just gave it to me at his cost, I'm sure the price he would have given anyone else would be much better than $470! That sounds like above retail!

K&N and Air Mass Sensors

This may be un-related, but when I had my 2001 Audi S4, it was well known to the Audi guys that K&Ns are too oily and that the oil was responsible for killing the sensor.
I switched to an AMS Foam Filter on the S4 and all was well. What are your thoughts on a dry, Foam Filter for the CLKs?

i use a regular k&n filter

i have a regular k&n filter element for at least 7k miles and no problems with air mass sensor. The clk air mass sensor broke for the first time at 79k miles and been good since then. Car currently has 90k miles.
