W208 Coupe 2 Broken Coil Springs

Hi Guys,

My 2001 CLK 230k Coupe went in for a service yesterday at a local garage as it was nearly due and had been making an awful clunking noise from front and rear of car turns out nsf coil spring and osr coil springs had broken along with the osf track rod and osf ball joint

So car is in with them until next tuesday been quoted £580 including parts and labour which i thought was very reasonable as all four coil springs are going to be replaced.

The only other downside is i have a Peugeot 107 1.0 litre thing as a courtesy car and of course its manual after driving a Benz and automatics for a while its very hard to drive something so small.

Has anyone else had to have all four replaced as i am interested to know how much you were charged?

Both fronts were replaced on mine before i bought it, think broken springs are more common than people think on any make, are they fitting genuine merc ones? Patten ones were fitted and garage rejected them as it didn't sit right, the genuine ones were only a tenner more,

Edit: £230 i think supply and fitted,

Hi,

Yeah i requested they fit the Merc ones as you say the difference in price was minimal they said to me it was £15 per spring

Price seems right for two so double i would say for all four i think i have got a good deal in the end considering the other bits that needed doing.

I have to agree it does seem that it is more common and depending on where they break you might not have any trouble or noticeable difference in handling.
I certainly have not noticed a difference just a loud noise over certain bumps and lumps in the road. Surprising really i thought it would be really obvious.

I wonder how mnay people are driving around with similar problems but are not aware of it. Quite a few i imagine

If you were going to get all four springs replaced, you could have upgraded to Eibachs or H & R's? which would also have given you a little lowering too if you like that, however if you like the standard height then stick to the Merc springs.
Just to let you know the springs are not expensive, but you are paying mostly for labour im afraid.
Just make sure the garage does an alignment after the front end is touched with new springs, track rod end etc. As the car may have been aligned with broken springs and it only needs to be out by 0.5mm to wear your tyres out. If the garage knows this they should do the alignement as part of the work, its well worth asking.

Yes forgot about tracking, out of interest how much are just the rear springs on their own, parts only please?

I also learnt the hard way on another car had patten springs fitted and it was way high and never settled as I was told, I should have taken it back but sold it soon after, I think most people realise a springs gone only when they fail the mot, they must snap at the top,

I replaced my front LCA's last year, and when I pulled the original springs, I was surprised to find that both were broken at about 6 inches up from the bottom coil. I've always worked on my vehicles, and have never (never) encountered a broken spring. Another gear head friend that was handing me tools and beers also found it peculiar, and commented that MB metallurgy is sorely lacking. I agreed, though replaced with OEM.
