How long should MAF last?

How long should MAF last?
Fitted a new one back in 2009 after the original lasted more than 103,000 miles.
Replacement has done only 40,000m, but engine running incosistently with intermittent delayed throttle response.
Took out the MAF and cleaned it, as per excellent advice on this site. Doesn't seem to have made much difference, and I'm thinking that I need to buy and fit another new one.
