You are lucky, I have two 12's, and something in the back of my car is rattling like hell even at low volume. When I find the time, I am going to tear the thing apart and get to the source of it.
yeah, the clk has some annoying rattles... the most common will come from the rear deck/hat rack... it SHOULD be coming from the rear sunshade... the hard plastic of the sunshade is hitting the rear deck... if you hear the noise, just erect () the sunshade, and i bet the noise will go away...

also, there can also be rattles coming from your license plate frame, but that is something you might not hear in the car... i did what Bruce mentioned, use some double sided tape to secure the frame to the actual plate. that eliminates the rattle from that.

The rattles inside the car are minimal, it is outside the car that is really bad. I just don't want to be driving around in a nice CLK with the trunk rattling around like a civic, even though I can't hear it from inside. The license plate rattled bad, but I put some double stick tape on it. Something else in there is really rattling, I am not sure what it is.

im a little late here, but im running 1 Alpine Type R 12 in a custom sealed box. took out the plastic piece separating the trunk from the cabin via the armrest and sealed the sub running directly into the cabin. sound is very tight and accurate, and if i wanted to bump around town like a thug, i guess i could. i wasnt familiar with Alpine subs prior to this one, but am very pleased with it. very crisp, accurate bass. ill get some pictures if there is any interest here. looks like nothing from the trunk, and all you see is the sub through the armrest. as of yet, i have no rattling problems, but i also dont pound the thing on my country and rock music.

Used to be a CLK430
For all of you who simply 'added' subs, how did you get strictly the lower frequencies?? Low pass filter? Amp with crossover? I have an Eclipse head unit, and 2 sets fo MBQs sitting in the garage, but just want to add a little thump...any help??

Get yourself a amp with a built in crossover that's the easiest way. A couple of subs with the equipment you mentioned and you're done

When I had my CLK, I replaced the speakers with Focal Utopias... they sounded INCREDIBLE. Sub duties were handled by two Focal 10s... our biggest problem was rattling and vibration. The CLK definitely was not a paradigm of build strength! We had to dynamat most of the car to quiet it down. The benefit was the elimination of rattles and resonances (which I experienced even with the stock Bose system.)

my dad has all focal utopia setup in his 1991 560SEC with a single 10" sub in a sealed enclosure. he also added 2 6x9s in sealed boxes on the rear deck and we used some MDF and cut out slots for the boxes and covered everything in felt to match the saddle interior. cant see the speakers and the finished product looks clean. but all i can say is that the focal speakers and subs, while expensive, cannot be beat in my opinion. first time we powered it up after the install was complete, i was just amazed at the crisp accurate sound. i heard instruments and sounds in my favorite songs i never knew were there.

FOCAL
