Need some knowledgeable people

Ok My car has been running hot for like 2 months now. If I leave the car stopped and running then the engine temperature will go straight up past 120.I was never at 80, it would always go to like 90-100 and stay there unless i was driving fast where the rush or air would cool the engine down.

The engine fan's that are suppose to cool the car down isnt working. I brought it in to my mechanic and he said, its either a blown fuse or the control module. Whatever, fuses are fine so he replaced the control module ($180 including labor.) I didnt drive the car for a couple days and when I drove home everything seemed fine but i never really idled that long to notice. Drove it to work. boom, problem still exist. This time he says there is a short and only one fan is spinning but he will find the short.

He had it for 3 days, now he says its some "push button." His star diagnostic program broke so he has to go get one from the dealer and I have to bring the car back tomorrow. Anyone know what the hell a push button is. The only buttons being pushed are mines!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats not good... is your car out of warranty? i would have suggested to just take it in to the dealer instead of messing with private mechanics...

I had some advice but since you trashed me in another thread for voicing my opinion, I'll refrain.

hey simon, i suggest, since your car is still new, just take it to the dealer and get it checked... it won't cost you a dime anyways

heres an idea....

how about we use the forum for what its intended for.....the exchange of information and helping people with their questions.....instead of being petty.....

i understand the desire to not want to help someone because they pissed you off or didnt respect your opinion, but now would be a fantastic time to start respecting other peoples opinions either by thanking them, or if its that stupid, just ignore them. then the flow of information would be much smoother and no doubt help everyone else here out a lot.

just my $.02.....theres no need to be a badass on the internet....

nothing personal intended, this was more of a general thing based on numerous events.

I think since you already started with the mechanic that you should just stick with him. But you should tell him to apply th $180 you paid for the other stuff towards any more work he needs to do. You paid for him to fix a problem and it wasn't fixed. If he doesn't know what he's doing then he should refund you your money. I'm assuming you are not under warranty since you took it to him in the first place. If you take it to the stealership then you may as well count on giving them your left arm and quite possibly your leg as well.

You Should Take It back To YOUR Mechanic..And Request That He Will correct the Problem You Brought it in for!
1 Check The Cooling Fan Operation
2 Check for Cold Spots on the Radiator
3 Check for Belt slipping @ Idle
4 Inspect The radiator cap with a testor
5 Inspect the A/C Condensor for Blockage The Front Side
Also Have YOUR Mechanic Recheck The System ..Let it run for 45 min to a Hour to test the Operation..BEFORE he Returns the Car back to You.
He Should have Done this the first time ....

Good Luck

.....I do not know where you live but it could be as simple as climate....the last couple of months have been the hottest. Also, do you have the Evosport Pulleys? I noticed that my engine temperature has increased after the install of the pulleys. At first I thought it was because I removed the mechanical fan but after replacing it......nothing changed. I must say that it never goes above 100 but much hotter then before. I have since replaced my mechanical fan with an electric one and it does run a little cooler now. After the initial install of the pulleys.....my car ran as hot as 230 F. but that was around the hottest day of the year here. Since the electric fan install I am around 207 and spiking up to 216 F.

...again.....I feel that the Evosport pulleys effect the temp....but not to a dangerous level.

No longer car shopping...
here's a thought...

Take it to the DEALER! This is the type of stuff the no-name guys REEM you on. I guess you've already noticed. Have the dealer diagnose it and THEN decide if you want them to be the ones to fix it. Get the diagnosis in writting and then "shop" the price around!

To be honest, this guy used to work at Rallye MBenz dealership in Long Island, he was one of the lead mechanics there and he left to start his own business because management was hiring a bunch of incompetent "interns", I just stuck with him when my car went out of warranty. Hes very knowledgeable thats the only reason Im going with him.

If I didnt already pay him 180 then I would have took it to Sovereign, so im just going to take it back today and he says hes going to run a check on the system with the STar program just to make sure its what he thinks it is.
Thanks for the help

Has anyone mentioned to check the thermostat?

If the fans not coming on should not matter at speeds
above ~35 mph. The moving air should be enough to
keep the car cool.

The fact that your mechanic cannot troubleshoot without
a 'scanner' leads me to believe he's 'weak'.

Do you work for mbusa or are you an automotive engineer of some sort? When im moving, there isnt a problem. The problem happens when I turn off the car or if im in stop and go traffic and no air is rushing inside the engine bay. Which thermostat are you referring to because he said he replaced one free or charge.

I am a mechnaical engineer by trade. I have designed automotive fuel systems. So I guess you could call me an
automotive engineer.

The thermostat I speak of is the common water thermostat in
the cooling system. its a mechanical regulator of sorts.
keeping water circulating around the engine block until it reaches
a set temperature. approx 80C for MB. then it opens, and allows
circulation through the radiator.

This is an 'analog' device, meaning it begins opening
as you approach 80C and will go WIDE open at temps higher than 80C. It also closes if temps go below 80C.

It basically maintains conatant tempeature of the cooling system.

If temps are too high this typically means stuck closed.
If temps too low then this typically means stuck open.

When you say 'temps are fine when moving' are they constant
as long as you are above a certain speed? of course allowing for
stabilization time....

When you have AC on do the fans work? running the AC causes the fans to be 'called' more often to keep the condenser cool.

check the Themoswitches too. there are 2. for 3 fan speeds.
low, med, and damn hot...

low kicks on with 1st switch
med kick on with 2nd switch
high kicks on with 2nd switch and AC
