Burnt Transmission Fluid
I bought my 2000 CLK 320 at 113K. At 120K miles, I went and completely flushed all the trans fluid out of the pan reservoir and torque converter. As near as I could tell, this was the first time it had been done as the original schedule did not require any fluid change - it was a "sealed unit" as far as Benz was concerned when the cars came out. They have since changed that interval to be 30K miles.
I'm glad I dropped the fluid as there was a marked burnt smell to the fluid that came out. Recently, at 150K, I did another fluid flush. When I dropped the relatively new fluid I again noticed the same marked burnt smell. I've worked on many cars - old and new - and have never smell as burnt a fluid as this.
My questions:
1). Has anyone else seen this condition?
2). What might be causing it?
3). What do I need to diagnose and fix it?
Thanks for your response.
