Help with recirc flap

Hello all,

Not sure if I'm calling it the correct thing but I'm speaking of the flap that opens and closes when you turn the air/heat on. Is it the recirculation flap? Lets air in? Anyway.

My 00 clk heat blows nice and hot, the air blows nice and cold, no problems there. The issue is when I turn on my climate (heat or air) rather than the flap opening slowyly or smoothly (now I have never seen one of these work so I'm assuming how it works) it sounds to me like it is either opening way to fast or maybe is a little gummed up and is stuck at first because it is popping open when it gets free.

It makes a popping sound for lack of a better term, like the flap shot open really fast or it is kinda stuck and the popped open. I hope you understand what I mean hear.

When I turn my heat/air off it does the same thing. Normal for a few seconds and then "pop" the flap sounds like it slams shut. Turn the heat back on and "pop" the flap opens.

I could try and open things up to watch it as it does it I guess? Maybe take some video to post. Maybe someone has heard of this before and has an idea? Hopefully its just dirty or something and a simple cleaning will correct it.

I have seached here and I have not found an answer.

I thank you in advance.

Guess I'm gonna have to tear the dash apart because it does it every time I turn the heat/ac on or off and it's embarrassing and loud. Scared my wife when she first heard it.

"What the heck was that"? Looked at me puzzled after she heard it.

If it's warm enough this weekend I'll work on it.

Thanks

There is a flap behinde the passenger side air bag under the windshield but you have to gut out the dash and the outside vents(below the windshield) to get to it. Let us know if you found a fix. Mine does the same thing.
