2001 CLK 320
CLK
I could be mistaken, but I was told that the "K" stood for either klein (meaning small) or kurz (meaning short). Therefore a coupe, light, small (or short).

2001 CLK320
You're right
This goes back to the 30's in MB model designations such as the type SS and SS-K
C =Coupe'
L =Leicht (light curb weight) compared to sedans
K =Kurz (shorter wheel base) compared to larger sedans
and, as we've seen in recent years after the numeric designation
C230 K = denotes 2.3 Kompressor - supercharged.
On the top level MB 20's - 30's models it was optional to get a supercharger if you could afford it.
In the current (U.S. offerings) models you have:
SL =Sport Leicht
SLK=Sport Leicht Kurz
C = Compact series
CLK = Coupe Leicht Kurz
E = Executive series
S = Super series
CL= Coupe Leicht ?? (not sure about this) in the old days this was merely a coupe body of the S class
ML = (I have not idea - never thought about it - not an SUV enthusiast)
G =Gelandewagen
There are other series offered in other countries

Here is what AMG stands for & the AMG timeline, enjoy!
1967
Hans Werner Aufrecht (A) and Erhard Melcher
(M) open up business in Großaspach (G). Their

1971
AMG achieves its first motor sports success: a
victory of the AMG-Mercedes 300 SEL 6.9 at the
24-hour race at Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps
circuit. Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz
place first in their class, with the AMG-Mercedes
finishing second overall.
1978
Now with 40 employees, the company outgrows
the Old Mill in Burgstall and moves to
Affalterbach.
1988
AMG begins its racing comeback, teaming up
with Mercedes-Benz in the German Touring Car
Championship.
1989
AMG is victorious in the German Touring Car
Championship. Klaus Ludwig and Johnny
Cecotto amass seven wins in the series.

employees and a contract with Daimler-Benz
that extends beyond motor sports.
1992
Klaus Ludwig becomes German Touring
Champion with AMG.
1993
AMG reaps the first fruits of its affiliation with
Daimler-Benz. Together, the companies

Touring Champion with AMG.
1995
AMG wins the German Touring Championship
for the third time in the history of the event
and the ITC title in its first year. Champion of
both series is Bernd Schneider.
1996
With Bernd Schneider at the wheel, AMG wins
the co-championship of the International
Touring Car Championship. AMG premieres the
E 50 AMG at the Geneva Automobile Salon,
marking AMG's evolution from pure assembly
to assembly and manufacturing.
1997
AMG marks one manufacturing success after
another, producing 5,000 C 36 AMGs and
2,000 E 50 AMGs and successfully launching
successor models C 43 AMG and E 55 AMG
following the IAA in Frankfurt. Bernd Schneider
wins the championship for himself with the
Mercedes CLK-GTR and the team
championship for AMG-Mercedes.
1998
The street version of the CLK-GTR appears in a
limited series of 25. AMG-Mercedes wins all ten
races in the FIA GT Championship. Klaus
Ludwig and Ricardo Zonta win the
championship title.

Hal H,
if
C = Compact
E = Executive
S = Super
Are these actually what they stand for, or just the German to English translations? If so, do they have German equivalents?
