W208 Pulleys & tensioner

Hello all!

Having my serpentine belt changed this week and wanted to do my idler tensioner too.

I would like to change all the pulleys at the same time so how many are there and what are their names?

When I search online I only see idler pulley and belt tesioner mentioned.

Or is the idler pulley and belt tensioner the only ones I should change? This work is being done for two reasons.

#1 mileage 130k. They were already on my list to do.
#2 I noticed just today I have a slight wine I never heard before similar to a bad belt sound just not screaming loud, just loud enough that I noticed and thought to myself. "my car is very quiet is that a belt whine?" This was at night so I could not look under the hood. Performnce remains normal.

Thanks for your help and by the way, when searching I have read plenty on the one pully or belt and or tesioner but nothing on " there are 3, 4 or 2 pulleys and these are the names, etc.

Thanks

There is no reason to replace the other pulleys and that is probably why you are not finding anything on them. The other pulleys are connected directly to the part they are driving so if they are the cause of the whine the part needs to be replaced and not the pulley. For example it could be the ac compressor, alternator, or power steering pump. These are all unlikely suspects and expensive to replace just for the heck of it. Just replace the belt, tensioner and idler and go from there. If it still makes the noise then go chase down the other ones.

Yeah it seems a few have said similar elsewhere. Goingbto look i to buying the rest of the parts today. (Only have the belt so far) hopefully they will be here this week.

Thanks for the info. Anyone else have anything to add? Agree or disagree with the provided info?

The water pump bearings could also be on their way out. Generally you only need to change the tensioner with pulley and the idler pulley and of course a new serpentine belt. Do not go for the cheaper tensioner if you intend keeping the car for any length of time.

Agreed.

One final question for anyone. I'm curious if those with the older style pulley can swithch to the newer style or do they have to keep which ever style they have?

My parts will go in on Tuesday 4/9. Will let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks to all!

The newer style is the correct replacement part - no problems.
