2000 CLK Convertible Top gets stuck opening
2000 CLK Convertible Top gets stuck opening,
if given a not so light push, it will continue opening. It closes fine.
The pump does not stop running when it gets stuck. I have checked the screw to pressurize the pump, and it is pressurized.
Pic Attached on where it stops.
any ideas?
thanks

Looks like you aren't pushing it up far enough in the beginning. After rear of the top comes up, the compartment opens up and the the rear of the top goes down you need to push up on the top about a foot. You should see the top flex at the first joint. At this point the top will go down by itself. It looks like the first joint is straight in the picture which is causing it to bind. The top doesn't go down just by pushing the button, you do need to give it the initial assist. Don't worry, you aren't alone, I did this the first time I put my top down. I totally thought it was broken and almost took it back. Turned out it was user error.

Well this weekend I was working on the hydraulics replacing a couple of cylinders, thank you Klaus at Top Hydraulics, and during the testing process, up and down a couple of times, I heard a loud pop, I stopped and looked and I found a broken cable.
Now it is easier to push, it needed a quite a bit of force to push before, now it is manageable. It is my sister's car, I think she would have had a hard time pushing it before, it is ok now. Now I just put my arm straight up while sitting and it works.
Eventually it will get fixed.

You have a busted cable...reason the pump is still running is because it's not a switch problem...it's a cable issue which causes the roof not to be in the proper position (tilted up) to retract hence it pressures the pump....look under the cover about 12 inches from the beginning of the roof going backwards you'll see two cables....left/right...either one or both snapped which causes the roof to not tilt up properly. i believe it's called the boden cable. fix that and your problem should be solved...the cable is roughly about 130 each. let me know if you still have problems, i'm quite familiar with these convertible top issues.

It is defiantly a cable problem. If your handy at repairing things. There is a cheaper repair though.
If the cables are not broken they can be re-used and re-crimped with some cable clamps purchased at the local hardware store.
There is a DIY on a brother site, I don't have the link saved though.
Cheers, Gator
