Anyone familiar w/ shift lock release

I've been having issues getting my 2001 started due to my battery going dead and still will not start. I finally tried the shift lock release on the gear box as I read on a few posts and hoping I did not mess anything up, because now I can put it into any gear, with or without the key fob in the ignition and by the way it still not start. But anyway I can put it into gear without tapping the breaks at all and now if I tap the breaks, the brake lights do not turn on.

According to other posts, it directed me to the shift lock release on the shift box, directly below the shift lever, slight to the left and it had a tiny spring door that you were able to fit a screw driver down. Again since I tried that, I can move the shift knob to every gear with or without key and with or without tapping the brake.

Any suggestions. Thank you very much
