Newbie questions.. any help appreciated

sorry if this is the most commonly asked questions. I know how annoying it can be.

I'm looking to buy a 99 or 2000 CLK 430 this week. My budget is around 30,000.

Basically, is there anything I should look out for?

I definitely want a nav system. Any recommendations?

I don't believe those years came with projection headlights right? If not, how much do conversions usually cost?

Just throw any advice or opinions towards me and it would be greatly appreciated.

I'll keep reading all the posts around here.

You should definitely plan on getting a 2000. Along with side mirror blinkers, the 2000 also has steering wheel controls and a multifunction display. If you don't get navigation with the car, you can easily have it retrofitted by Steve (MBenzNL on this board) (s_krabbenborg@hotmail.com) for less than $1500 (contact him for exact pricing). About projectors, I don't know if you're referring to actual projector housings or Xenon lights. Xenons were available for those years but not projectors. Projectors aren't available, but xenons are easily retrofittable (Steve can get you those as well).

thanks. I meant xenons. What's the real difference anyway? Must have been confused. I thought xenons were just a brand name for projector headlights. HIDs.

projector style xenons offer some luminance benefits over our standard xenon headlights, but for the most part, it is mainly an aesthetics thing...

no one here has ever done a projector xenon light upgrade... at least not that i've seen

Definitely go for the MY2000 model or newer. With a $30K budget I am almost positive you will find one in your price range. Along with what Josh mentioned earlier they matched the color of the lower trim and the impact strips to that of the car (makes a big difference IMO).
So many of us with '99s end up spending, or at least wanting to spend, a lot of money on mods for our cars that come standard or at least optional on the 2000+ models.
Unless you're talking about an $8K price difference or more, go for the 2000 and have the patience to wait for the perfect one.

For what features you want...

Comand (factory navigation system) started availability in the 2000 model year.

Xenon lights were optional in all years - it was never standard equipment on the CLK.

another thing to consider - prior to the touch-shift you had that convoluted shift gate (P, R, N, D, 4, 3, 2, 1) to go through for the other gears - less convenient when you want to select other forward gears.

But it still had the adaptive software anyway.
