Question about tires (02 CLK 430)

So i'm in need of some new tires right now. I was looking at discount tires and at first I was looking to get different size tires (245/40-17 rear, 225/45-17 front). The guy at DT told me that its best to get the same brand for all 4 tires but different sizes. He said I could even do different sizes such as a 235/45-17 for the front. I was wondering if this is true and if I should do that? I want to get all 4 tires, but i'd have to go to 2 different Discount tires to get the tires I want. He told me I could do the 235 for the front and 245 for the back and they would have all 4 tires there.

price would be $380

You can get whatever tire you want as long as the size is correct and the speed rating is within proper range. I've often found discount tire points their customers to the most expensive tire options. They do it very easily because most people have little knowledge about cars in general. I personally order tires off of tirerack. I would always spend $600 on rear tires at discount, but I recently spent $250 total for both rear tires off of tirerack.com and havent had any problems.

I bought some discontinued Dunlop direzza tires from discount last month. I went with 225 in the front and 245 in the rear because that's the stock size on my clk55. I was OTD for $500 for the set of 4. If they can round you up a set it is a great price.

Is it recommended to get the same brand for all 4 tires? Can I get one brand for the front tires and a different one for the rear tires?

It's ok to use different brands on front and back if you like. I would choose width based on your rims width. Make sure speed rating is same or better than stock and enjoy.

I would use the stock width... Stretching tires may be a fad, but in my view the car already suffers from understeer, less patch on the road would just make that problem worse. Plus, if your car is stock on the height, there, in my opinion, is already enough of a gap in the front wheel well, no need to make that worse.

If you go with 235 fronts I'd upsize to 255 rear tires. I've been drooling over the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I can't wait to get a set of those at least for rear tires.

There are different variables to look at with tires:

What do you want out of the tires?
-long tread life
-traction

In many cases the cheapest tires aren't the best. Cheap tires often wear unevenly or faster than more expensive ones. Right now Michelin Pilot Super Sports are some of the stickiest, longest wearing, and lower priced tires on the market.
