Insurance for mods?

With all the mods folks are doing (COMAND, retrofitting steering wheels/clusters,wheels, bodykits, etc) on our cars, whats the view on insurance and coverage for these added options?

Will insurance cover factory options that you retrofit (COMAND, TV tuners, V60 upgrades) without adding them seperately to your policy?

Do non-factory wheels, bodykits, and other options require additional coverage?

Is addtional coverage worth it?

Anyone?

to guard against theft, i would think you'd need to add the COMAND, wheels, and other upgrades onto your policy.

if you didn't buy added coverage for these items, and they get damaged in an accident, the insurance will still pay for the damaged goods....

i'm sure others can elaborate more on auto insurance coverages...

when i was getting my own insurance for the first time, i asked the guy about systems, rims, body kits, etc. he said the rims and bodykit would just be covered as part of the the car, just like OEM stuff, but anything you were serious about that the insurance company would question, take pictures of. actual photos (not digital) with dates, and have model numbers and things like that in the shot, if possible.

My insurance, which is Progressive, will only cover my aftermarket rims/tires up to the original value of the OEM rims/tires. Same with the stereo equipment. I don't know how other insurance companies work, but i'm sure it's pretty similar.

Post Insured Mods

Any Mod That is a OE (FACTORY) mod like
Comand/Xeon headlites/CD changer/AMG body kit/Phone
Will be covered under the policy since its a OE mercedes part
BUT any NON USA part will NOT be covered since The MB dealer will not be able to replace the Euro item.

On any NON OE Mods
Like Aftermarkit wheels/tire /stereo/etc
You can Have It Insured under (Custom and Special add on Equipment) For Yes MORE money added to the Policy
With Proof of Purchase and Pics

I had an additional $4000 coverage on my 20" rims through Geico Insurance and it only costed about $50/yr.

Ok how about this twist Mark,

OEM parts (Comand, multifunction steering wheel and instrument cluster) retrofitted into a car which didn't have them as options when the car was new?

I assume if the repair was done by a shop other than a MBZ dealer, if these things needed to be replaced, they could just order the items by part number and no one would know a difference.

Interestingly, my insurance company told me any wheels I put on (aftermarket or not) is covered as part of the car without additional coverage. Guess coverages vary.
