What could be causing this tapping????

Hello,

thanks to the tips I've found on this site, I've been able to do a few diy repairs and saved more than a few bucks. Thanks to all...

I've searched the forum but can't find a fix for this one problem... I have an '03 Clk 430 for about 6 mo's now, after it sits overnight or even after 6/7 hours I can feel a tapping under my left foot and then it goes away after a 1/2 mile or so and then it drives fine.

I've had the car 3 years, had the oil pan gasket changed 2 years ago, the tranny does slip occasionally, I put all new tires about 6 mo's ago...ummm??? could that have something to do with it?

Have you checked the oil level?

About a month ago the oil light came on and I put 1 can of Mobil1 in it. The last oil change was almost 2 years but I've only put maybe 10k on it and the service light has not come on yet.
Edit.. just checked it and it's very low. Will be getting an oil change ASAP. Why do you think k that is the cause?

When engine oil is low, oil has a hard time getting to the top of the motor to the valvetrain thus causing the lifters to tap or knock. Oil change services should be preformed every 3 to 5 months regardless of mileage. Oil breaks down over time even if the car is just sitting. I hope that you get your car back on a timely service schedule. Also look into the transmission issue before something catastrophic happens. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

You should be checking your oil level periodically. If you don't want to use the dipstick, there's the on board computer oil level check function. 2 years and 10k is excessive for an oil change. That tapping is lifter tick from oil starvation. Not only is your oil likely thin at this point, your having metal on metal contact in your valve body.

As Magma red said oil breaks down over time. It looses its viscosity and thins. I wouldn't be surprised if when you change your oil it pours out like water.

Its much cheaper to follow scheduled maintenance than get behind and have to fix what breaks.
