Powdercoating

I just wanted a couple of opinions. As some of you know I painted my front grill black but it keeps chipping and is a pain to keep touching up. I decided to look into getting it powdercoated. I got a price of $275 to powdercoat the grill black.

Does that seem like a reasonable price? It seems worth it to me if I don't have to worry about the chipping and always touching it up.

$275 is high, look around, if you find a company that does black powers all day long, it will be cheaper. Some companies do fifferent colors, so each time they change color, there will be a setup fee...

Or ask them what day they will do a black run. just bring it in that day and they should give you a good price... since all they have to do is just put the grill there and run it through the machine...

What kind of powdercoat is this? Last I heard the grill couldn't be powdercoated because it's plastic and would melt in the baking/curing process...

In any case $275 to powdercoat a grill is a MAJOR *** reaming. Should be NO more than 50 bucks to powdercoat something that small.

Thanks, it did sound like alot but I am really excited about getting it done that I didn't realize how expensive it was. Well I called them back and it turns out the place that gave me that quote doesn't even do the sandblasting, I have to get it done before I bring it to them. I found another place that will do it all, I'm just waiting for a quote.

I'm not sure if it will withstand the heat. I guess they will be able to tell me when I take it in. If they can't guarantee it, I'll chance it since I have a spare on hand.

Hopefully it'll work and I won't have to worry about the touch up.

Black chrome finish is what I'm thinking. I don't want it to be matte.

Eleni,

Did you have the chrome beadblasted off of the grill before you painted it? That makes a pretty big difference on how the paint sticks. You might consider that if powdercoating doesnt work due to the heat thats involved in the process.

Thanks, I may have to try that if the powdercoating doesn't work.

You can't powdercoat plastic. The curing process will melt the grill. Paint is pretty much your only option.

So does everyone strip the chrome off first and then get it painted? I've been laggin on getting mine done as well but couldn't think of a way to get the chrome off. Any help would be great, thanks!

i've had my grill painted for 6 months, and my brothers s500 was also plastic primered 8 months ago. No chiping problems at all yet (knock on wood).
