Transmission Leak.....

This is sort of a repost, but with more detail. Looking at my 1998 CLK320 (70k miles) from underneath, the dealer (independant and recommended) and I noticed a sort of leak from the transmission area. The fluid (a small amount) seems to be on the outside of the pan (that square plastic looking thing if you have ever been under the car). Was told it is my conductor plate, but another dealer said it is a bad gasket/seal. The choice is between a $500 conductor plate (which I hear is a suggested replacement part as it was later redesigned) or an $8 gasket. Any one have any thoughts???? BTW I cannot find the "conductor plate" part on the parts list that was posted?

If it was me, I'd do the $8 gasket first... if that didn't solve the problem, then change the conductor plate...

Best case scenario: You save $500
Worst case scenario: You spend an extra $8

Great suggestion. How bad is the leak, Just a little bit of oil, or AT fluid can spread to look worse than it really is. Is it dripping and leaving spots on the drive? If not, just keep an eye on it or just replace the gasket as previously suggested.
