Engine Tapping

Guys,

Need help. Last couple of weeks I have been noticing a tapping noise at rest either when in park or in gear, and I asked the dealer. They said that it was some carbon release valve BS. What I want to know is, if this is a function of the vehicle, why does it do it all the time. AND, doesn't that mean that there is excessive carbon build up and something is wrong????!?! Help..

You didn't say if the engine is running or not. I will assume that it is. My friend had the same noise in his E class and his ML, and was told by several dealers that it was in the fuel injection, and that it was normal.

That is what he was told, It seems to be more noticeable at times than others. Sometimes it can't be heard.

I wouldn't sell it just for that reason, It isn't hurting anything, If in fact we are talking about the same thing. The noise I am referring to, is not really very loud, at it's loudest, and you have to be outside of the car to hear it. Is that how your's is?

I had mine checked out and I was told by several MBZ mechanics that the newer generation engine blocks are made with thinner walls so they commonly make more noise and the tapping sound is a typical by product of that. My does it too.

I also have the sound, I always think there is something wrong with the car because I just bought it, but MB told me it was the fuel injectors making the noise and that it was normal. It doesnt do it all the time, so I wonder; How can that be normal???

If the sound is intermitent it is a small valve in the engine compartment on the drivers side. Yes it is noisy and MB should have done a better job isolating it but it is normal and not harming anything. If the sound you guys are hearing is the constant tapping sound that's more than likely the valvetrain and that's too is normal. MB swithed to the modular type engines in MY 99, they are much noisier than the former DOHC 4 valve design. Although the newer modular engines are torquier (both a flatter curve and at lower revs) they saved MB about 50%, yes 50% over its predecessor. Cost cutting is so great isn't it?

My tapping comes out of the left front most section of the engine compartment.

As I stated above, if it's intermitent it's the valve. Next time you hear it stop and open the hood, your ear should direct you to the pressure valve, you can actually put your hand on it and feel it working

Our 99' ML430 makes the same noise when running...kind of like a "tapping" or "ticking" sound in the front left of the engine.
