Window suddenly broke

Window suddenly broke
uhh...my window was working fine today then all of a sudden i get home and try to put it up and it doesnt go! i tried pressing for it to go down, it made a noise for a second and then started going down. i press for it to go up, it makes a noise as if its moving up, the noise stops as if it got all the way up...but the window is still stuck in the same position. now it's not even going down!
from the w208 parts list, it looks as if its on some sort of carriage that pushes it up and down...but it makes NO sense how it sounds as if the carriage is moving all the way up/down but not even touching the window! i would think that if it came off the carriage, i would hear horrible noises from it moving up/down while scraping against the glass.
any ideas?
