'01 CLK 430 cab, '04 SL500 (230K miles)
I had the same problem. Cleaning the corrosion from the seat switch circuit board fixed the problem.
Pry out the switch from the door with a plastic pry tool. Take the switch apart and you'll probably find some corrosion on the circuit board. Carefully scrape off the corrosion from the backside of the circuit board (don't damage the board) then brush with some alcohol and a stiff toothbrush. Put everything back and hopefully it will work again.
This video will give you a good idea how to get the switch out. Careful when prying the switch out as not to break the clips. You can skip about the first 4 min of the video.
