Can you determine a more specific location for where the sound is coming from? If you are hearing it from the engine compartment as opposed to the under carriage, this could indicate very different issues.

You might try removing the air box from the top of your engine and throttle the engine by hand while listening under the hood. This may eliminate concerns about bearing or vaccum problems in / or around you motor. From there just keep working your way to toward the back of the car while you or a friend revs the car to about 2500 rpm. This will get you through the exhaust system possibilites. If you still don't hear the noise, the the car will have to be "loaded" to produce it. In otherwords, the drivetrain must be under torque conditions with the drive wheels distributing the torque to the road. If you get to this point, you could be looking at $$$ fix. Try and rule out the simple stuff first....good luck.

P.S. clkal coud be right on the money...it could be a tire issue. Check for abnormal wear patterns on the fronts first, especially the inner tread to side wall. CLK's are not great at holding their alignment and the abnormal wear will create some annoying sound.
