The leak in your trunk had nothing to do with the LCD failing. It happens all the time on the clusters, it's fairly common. Older instrument clusters had separately replaceable LCD displays, but not anymore.

Same thing happened to me last week. It was the temperature. I took it directly to them to show the dead pixels. Good thing I did that cause the appointment wasn’t for another week and during that week the pixels came back. They still put another cluster in but it jacked my miles up 100 now I’m at 48,855.
