CL or SL Hood and Safety

All,

I just had a thought.

I'm sure that the CLK was crash tested with the factory hood...

What impact on safety is seen when you replace the factory hood with a fiberglass hood?

Just a thought.....

RIGHT

That's just what I was thinking.

It's cool to have a super-fast car that has no weight (relatively speaking)...until you hit or get hit by something.

Then....you just have to hope the damn seatbelts and airbags do their job.

playing devils advocate here

..if you think about it... how much can the originial hood do/is designed to do for you in a high speed crash.. it's not really a proven safety device (or is it...not sure ..so help me out)

i was thnking this because a friend of mine rear ended a truck at say 10 miles an hour and it bent up the hood pretty badly....

jsut a thought....

Hoods are meant to bend/crumple severely in accidents. I don't think replacing it will negatively affect your car's performance in a crash, unless the hood didn't break apart and wound up coming into the cabin .

They are meant to bend and absorb some of the energy.

A fiberglass hood is going to crumple...and absorb little or no energy in the process.

I do agree...that any hood should give way. The question is...how much is give...and how much is calculated to keep some of the force from going into the cabin.

It may not be relevant...but...still..an interesting question I think.
