defective lamp brake light issue
Hello all,
First post here. Purchased a 1999 CLK 320 yesterday and trying to sort a couple of minor things out.
I have the defective lamp warning light as soon as I start the car. All the lamps are lit and since I have the error message I changed the 2 brake light bulbs because when the brake pedal is depressed only the rear window brake light comes on. Changing the bulbs for new one's didn't make any difference. The one filament in the brake light bulbs is lit up with the lights turned on but the second ones don't light up when the brake pedal is depressed.
Any thoughts on my issue?

Correction: I see I have the left hand license plate lamp out as well. I'll replace that one and see if it makes the error message go away.
I'm guessing the fact the other 2 lower brake lights aren't coming on is possibly a circuit issue?

UPDATE:
Licence plate bulb replacement didn't make any difference to the error code.
Puzzle solved. It was a bulb not properly seated in the socket. To me it looks like the socket has openings that are 180 degrees from each other. The brake light bulbs that are being sold as replacements are offset at about 160 degrees and you have to put the pin that is higher in first, push down and turn slightly in the opposite direction then turn it back in the correct direction and then it will be properly seated.
Error message gone.

The previous owner installed garden variety brake light bulbs, as sold by many auto supply stores. The warning was caused by the wattage being incorrect and/or the electrical contacts not being properly aligned.
When replacing bulbs, the OEM specifications are in the practical hints section of the owner's manual. The brake lamp is a 21/4 W bulb, which has the pins offset 150 degrees apart (e.g. not 180 degrees) as well as being at different heights.

Additionally, force fitting the wrong bulb may also damage the bulb's socket.
If you need an owner's manual, you can down load a .pdf copy and save it here.

PS: The hard copy supplied with the CLK was more than 300 pages and specific information is difficult to find (e.g.the table of contents and index not the greatest). In the electronic .pdf version, you can easily search, find and go directly to all instances, using a topic key word(s) or phrase.

Thanks again for your help. You seem to be this forum’s go to guy. Appreciated.
