Creaking Noise Fixed
I've been looking for a creaking noise in the front of my wife's 2003 CLK320 cabriolet for about a year, and I finally found it and fixed it. Hopefully this info will help someone else.
The noise only was heard when driving, not when you push down on the fender, or when turning the wheels back and fourth. I checked every part of the suspension and steering and found a bad lower ball joint and a bad tie-rod assembly, but replacing those parts didn't make the noise go away.
It turned out to be one of the straps that are bolted to the underside of the body and front cross-member, as supports to keep them from moving around. All of the bolts were tight, but i guess they weren't tight enough. I took the front bolt out and put a hard plastic washer between the strap and the cross-member. I then tightened all three bolts with a half-inch impact gun.
No more creaking noise.
