Headlight Switch?

Ok, so I have a 2002 CLK320 with just over 400k miles on it. It was a gift from my uncle to my mom last year so it's sentimental to her. Well recently we notice her headlights go out after being replaced they last about 4-5 months before a new bulb has to be put in. Driver side works no problem but the passenger side is the big problem lately. I put in a new bulb yesterday and I saw that it went back out immediately. Turns out when I turn on the headlights the #6 fuse blows almost immediately. I thought it may be the headlight bulb connector as the insulation around the wire is pretty much gone. Replaced the connector and it still blew a new fuse immediately. I know the bulb still works because I checked it using the driver side to verify it wasnt the bulb and when I press the button to unlock my car both headlights illuminate like they normally do. My question is does the headlight switch sound like the culprit that could be making the fuse blow immediately. Or do I need to trace the wiring for a short all the way to the bulb itself?

I pulled a switch from the salvage yard just to test if that is indeed the problem. Could anyone suggest what else to check? Any help is greatly appreciated. TYIA

Check or replace the cables that supply current to the lamp. Over time they degrade and can short-circuit.

From the headlight switch to the light or just the cable that holds the bulb at the light housing?

proabably behind the headlight unit. My 2000 clk320 has rotten wires behind the headlight...the insulation has cracked and fallen off.

Update: I replaced the wiring to the headlight to get the same problem. Went to the salvage yard and pulled a headlight switch from a 2000 E320. The part numbers were the same so I put the replacement in and it solved the problem.

Which makes me wonder does anyone know if you can fix the problem that causes the headlight switch to burn one headlight?

Congratulations on 400K+ miles.

What you actually replaced was the N7-1 light control module, which is a combination switch and fuse box.

The short circuit was somewhere internal within the N7-1 control module and not likely the switch.

The left and right, low and high beams are fused with 4 separate fuses.

The fuse in position 6, that kept blowing, only fused your right low beam.

Your right side high beam, is fused by the fuse in position 3, and should have worked.
