car shuts off
Ok guys...I need help with this issue. My cas has been sitting waiting for my bumper to get painted. I went to start it and the barttery was dead. I used a jump box to start it. Car ran @ 30 mins. and shut off. I had to wait @ 1 hour for it to start. same think happen the next day. The next time it started I thought driving it would help. You guest it.......car cut off again. Once I let it sit for a while it starts fine. Any clue. Is this the crankshaft sensor or smart key?

I would have guessed the crankshaft position sensor, but since your car didn't start the first time when it was cold and started when you jumped the battery, I think it may be something else. The crankshaft position sensor, if I'm not mistaken, is sensitive to heat. So your car not starting when cold throws that idea out the window. Do you have any lights on in the car?
P.S. did you ever get around to checking on the price of shipping for those items I wanted to get from ya?

TresX..I sent you pm on the parts a few days ago. I had to jump the battery because it was dead. The car starts fine after it sits for a while. Maybe its the sensor.

Yesterday I left the office and lo and behold the car will not start either. Twenty minutes later, and after already putting in a call to Roadside Assistance, the car decides to start.
I had power during the entire time and I could hear the starter but it just wouldn't turn over. Is this the same issue as smalldog?
TIA.

One of my connections was loose connecting to the battery.
One of the small connections to the current. It kinda Splits into 2 smaller connections and one of those bolts was loose for me.

Its the crankshaft position sensor as stated above. You must refrain from trying to start the car when that piece is hot because its useless and you will kill your battery. The guys @ the body shop might have been trying to start it and killed your battery. I jwas forced to change mine on saturday night. Independent wanted $470 including parts + labor. I bought the part discounted from a friend who works @ the dealer for $70 and put it in myself in 20 minutes... SAVED 400 DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The piece is very hard to see. Pull off the engine cover and it is located ON the engine on the drivers side about half way down. You just have to know what it looks like and where it would be. I think its right where the engine meats transmission. your going to need a torx wrench to remove a screw then pull it out and re-screw and your done. The piece commonly goes bad it stops working whenthe car gets hot. . Thats why when you let it sit there it will start back up again because its cooled down but when you start driving again BOOM. pm me, id be glad to help.

It happened to me again. I drove in to work about 10:45 and then we were going to lunch at about 11:30 and BAM!, won't start. The last time it did this to me the car was hot also, not to mention we are having some weird weather in LA right now (in the high 80's-90's).
Do you think this applies to me as well? If so could please see if you can get that part number and maybe snap a picture of where it goes?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Lucas.....can the sensor be removed from the top of the car or do I have to go under to remove it? What size torx do I need? Also is there a way to take a pic where the sensor is located? Thanks for any help.

It worked. Replaced the sensor and the car runs again. When you replace the sensor make sure you get the one that fits the connector in your car. One connects on the side and the other connects on the front.
Cost
sensor $107.00 (dealer)
female torx set $7.00 (auto zone) Cr-VE8 torx socket size
The job took about 20 mins.
Wish the rest of you guys luck.

did it work for you?
I've had this same issue on and off through the summer .. initially it wouldn't start of hot, but last week on my way to an interview it just died as I exited the freeway. Afterr cooling down, it came to life.
Yesterday, it shut off in bumper-bumper traffic and now sits at the dealer ... $250 to look and whatever follows after that
I notice the engine temp gauge fluctuates between 80 (middle line through the next (quarter bar) in hot conditions, is that waht you've noticed as well?

It was the easiest fix ever and it saved me $200 from having the dealer install it. If it isn't too late, order it from the parts department and just replace it yourself and save a ton of money.

too late :-(
If only I had stopped by this post earlier. The dealer said it is the crankshaft sensor that needs to be replaced. Extended warranty will cover it after a deuctible.
Lets hope that the problem is fixed after this, sitting in the middle of a busy street in 100F temp. isn't fun!

Oh believe me, I know what you mean. It also isn't fun when you're sitting on the corner of Gage and Figueroa in the middle of South Central (just about a mile away from where the Rodney King riots started).

Any update on these problems fellas? Did replacing that part help?
I experienced someting similar yesterday for the first time. I was running around a lot in town and it was hot outside, and when I shut the car off, it would not start back up. Actually, it started then stalled. This happned about 4 times then it just started up. As I was driving...it was hesitating a little but though.
Is this the Crankshaft Position Sensor going bad or will this happen regarldess, just when it is very hot?

I had this happen twice so far, the car turned off. I am going to change mine out just because it is easy to do and can't hurt. Any pics lucas would be helpful (of the engine compartment.
