[Diary] '99 CLK230 Kompressor - Uniform November

Hello, everyone!

I'm starting the Diary of my newest purchase. 3 weeks of ownership and so far I'm very pleased.
Purchased the car with a few quirks to fix and iron out.

The car has LPG alongside petrol which is a big plus in such a big engine towards anyone's wallet.

The quirks:
  • Roof doesn't work. Trunk parcel shelf sensor missing. Tensioners aren't providing any tension.
  • Parking sensors are reading on the "red". Continous sound for a few seconds then turns off.
  • Dashboard indicating an issue with a light.
  • Dashboard light on temperature gauge too dim.
  • Slight startles when cold. After warming up a little it doesn't startle any under acceleration.
  • Left Auto A/C button, + button, ECO button aren't working. However, A/C is working via the right Auto button
  • Some seat stitching needs care. Normal for a car of this age.

The plus:
  • Comfort
  • Interior colour
  • Sound
  • Engine
  • LPG
  • Almost everything

So far I have replaced the original radio for a Pioneer for Bluetooth pairing and call handling. Having a little trouble trying to find how to route the radio microphone cable behind the trim, through the centre console towards the back of the radio. I think I have to take out almost the entire centre console.

Fixed the warning light for the lightbulbs by replacing a tail light.

Already purchase the parcel shelf and support hooks. Just need to find the cable for the sensor in order to install it and begin testing.

A few hours dedicated to it which allowed me to improve some cons. Sorry for the bad quality pictures. Taken directly through a social media app which lowers the quality by a significant amount.
  • Able to reroute de microphone cable through the feet air vent carpet. Had to take everything but the A/C module. A little bit of modern, comfort tech for phone synching and call answering.
  • Removed dome light cluster and used compressed air to clean the A/C thermostat fan. No more loud noise coming from it. Specially when the car is stopped.
  • Replaced the right side tweeter cover. Broken by a previous owner. Now even has the insolating foam.
  • Replaced cup holder wooden trim for one in a better condition. Small things yet with detail.

Issues found:
  • Shelf cover cable for the switch was mangled. Someone cut the connectors and united the cables to keep in an open loop.
    • Looking at options: Either find the respective plug and crimp it or remove original plug from switch and create new crimped connectors.
    • I really wanted to keep things as original as possible.
  • Some previous owner went to the trouble of snipping the subwoofer RCA right connector.
    • Found a white cable which is running alonside the centre console tunnel however I don't have any idea what is meant for.
    • Correct me if I'm wrong. On one of the pictures below, the big plug with a single yellow cable was meant to provide power to the subwoofer?
  • Soft top wouldn't operate with the permanent bypass and lifting the roof - tensioners aren't forcing the roof to lift.
    • The chase continues.
    • There's no sound from the pump. Confirmed it has fluid.
    • The windows won't roll down. Not even engage. No relay sound.
  • The roof console button stays lit up when stationary. Flashes when moving.
    • From what I've been reading in this forum - great information and documentation - it seems the windscreen switch isn't detecting the roof properly closed.
Some pictures from today.

The switch position sensor missing. Cable hidden under the carpet without the original connector.

The "genius" work. Leaving the Left RCA channel untouched but cut the Right RCA (red)

Is this the power for the sub from the original radio?

Original has the varnish cracked and found a suitable replacement.

Part of getting acquaintance with your car.

Car has been behaving quite well. Still need to address the hiccups mentioned here.

However, yester night, while driving in the highway back to home the rear left tire bursted. A smidge below 120 kph.
Felt the car somewhat weird, the rolling sound was faintly different then suddenly a deep rumbling sound. Manage to steer safely to the shoulder, opened the door and noticed the tire wall still attached to the rim. Tire on the left lane (fast lane).
GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 ASYMMETRIC 3 XL from 0218 - Second week of 2018. Less than 20.000 km driven.
Since they have been discontinued, a pair of Asymmetric 5 XL will have to come forth.

The dreaded part was the tow truck driver decided to roll my car to the tow instead of reversing the truck and using the winch to do the work. I really hope the walls stood strong and prevented damage.

The tyre resting after quitting its job.

The aftermath. Glad for the XL (reinforced sidewall).

After a month, some minor updates.

Only a few days after I noticed the damage I can see on the wheel arch. The lip was bent outwards and paint chipped because of the tyre.
A video of the aftermath:

I have purchased a driver's side mirror since mine is losing its coating.

Found the connector for the parcel shelf and unfortunately someone cut the terminal leaving the wires with a simple plug to bypass. I would prefer to have the original male connector but still studying it.
Attempt to close the roof however only the windows are rolled down and no sound from the pump nor unlocking the rear bow cover.

After a few weeks of absence I was able to achieve some goals.
  • The driver's side mirror had to be returned because didn't have the original conector. I didn't fancy modding the wire harness,
  • Temperature gauge light fixed. Suffering from some kind of gap because a gentle slap on the dash made it work at 100%.
  • Roof is working!
    • Left the car this Monday on a tech specialized in convertible roofs with experience on CLKs. Picked it up this Thursday.
    • Left side strut (left rear passenger) was leaking. Fortunately I had plenty of struts when purchased the car as spare parts
    • Right side bow cover strut sensor wasn't plugged.
    • Right steel tensioner cable was broken. Replace and the most expensive part at 135€.
    • The parcel shelf sensor was purchased and had to do some soldering to keep it OEM. A spare tweeter gave it's wiring and conector.
Next in line: Parking sensors!

Leaving here important information regarding the two flexible rubber hoses from the fuel reservoir. Almost no information about the exact size.

As known, there is a chronic issue regarding the two houses identified as A2024761827 and A2024768726. The hoses become brittle and perish. Whenever the fuel reservoir is filled, gasoline saps out and spills on the rear right arm and the floor. Quite a lot.
There are videos on YouTube to identify the specific place however information is lacking about their size. Thus, I want to share it with anyone who still hasn't changed them.

Difficulty level: Beginner
Tools: Needle-nose Pliers, Clamp cutter, specific rubber hoses.

A2024761827
  • This tube has two different sizes.
    • From the canister side it has an external diameter of 24.24mm and internal diameter of 17.63mm
    • From the metal pipe side it has an external diameter of 21.79mm and internal diameter of 14.15mm
    • Wall thickness: 3.5mm
A2024768726
  • This tube can be sourced from any store as long as it's a proper fuel rubber hose. Mercedes couldn't source it.
    • External diameter of 21.42mm and internal diameter of 14.32mm
    • Wall thickness: 4.15mm (generic)
After changing and clamping them down, went to the petrol station and filled it up. No longer I smell gasoline after filling up and no longer spilling!

Pan out of both hoses
