CLK Battery Drain

POSTED IN WRONG FORUM EARLIER.

Hello all hoping I can get some experienced help. 2002 CLK320 with 35K miles. I do not drive the car regularly but do drive for about 25 miles every couple of weeks. I have been replacing battery every year and a half due to battery losing charge. Once car begins not starting it will start easily with a jump but never recovers. I have read MANY threads and problem seems to point to battery built into ATA . Threads have stated this behind the "right" fender wall. Is "right" passenger or driver side? Different if sitting in car or looking at it lol. I also see it is fuse 8 and 9 that controls this but pulling would disable FOB. I plan on tracing with meter this weekend to confirm this is where drawer is coming from. I also have seen unit needs to be literally cut open ? I am not interested in replacing as I am OK with no ATA but wondering if cutting wires going to alarm is an option rather than the work of removing. Would cutting wires interfere with other items on circuit? Thank you getting tired of buying $200 batteries !

Always imagine you're sitting in the driver's seat (even with RH drive) when you think of "left" or "right".
Your battery is in the rear passenger corner of the trunk (Rear Right). Lift the carpet and you will see it on your right (when standing behind the car).
It sounds to me like you know how to find the draw, but I would suggest using a trickle charger if you are not daily driving your car.
Good luck to you!

Thanks for explaining right/left. Like trying to explain if it is a RH or LH door lol. I use at a 2nd home and only have a carport so trickle charger does not work as I have no outlet. Have removed neg cable a couple of times but need to reset windows, radio etc so that is why I am on a mission to find the draw. Will update as I go along. Thanks again !

My pleasure! You can buy trickle chargers for under $50, that fit in the trunk and run an extension cord to it (that's what I do with my Audi).

If you don't use often and leave a trickle charger going, you can damage the battery. Instead get a float charger that will not cook the battery.

Agreed, but most (quality) chargers these days have those features built-in.
