Ignition Position Sensor Failure

Took my car in to the dealership to look at the problem I have with it not starting once in a while. They told me that it's the Ignition Position Sensor. The part alone costs $162 and total with labor is $420.

My question is this, is this a common problem. Has anyone else heard about this. Is it easy to install? Should I just get the part and install it myself?

TIA.

Don't know if it is the same as the crank sensor. Ask them the location. If it is located on the backside of the engine near the tranny it's the same. Also ask the SA if it is sometimes called the crank sensor.

It's the same thing as the crank position sensor. Do you happen to know exactly where it goes?

When you pull the engine cover off, look at the back of the motor on the driver side near the firewall. It will have a black cable connected to it. Ask the SA to show you the location on their drawing. Then you can fine it on you car. It will be sitting up where the engine and tranny meets.

Okay I found the sensor but I can't get the bolt off of it. The angle that it's in makes it very difficult to reach, let alone fit a wrench in. Can someone help me out on how to get the old sensor out?

Pretty please...

You can buy a set of female torx (star) sockets. ( @$7.00 at auto zone)
The socket size is Cr-VE8. Use your hand to place the socket on the bolt then put your rachet/extension in the socket and turn.

Thanks for your help. I got it out using a 1/4" socket with a universal joint, 10" extension bar and a ratchet. It took me four hours total to remove one bolt but I still saved myself $200 from having the dealership install it.

Thanks again for your help.

Samoan,

When you say it doesn't start once in a while, what exactly do you mean? does it crank at all?

It cranks but then it doesn't completely "turn over". Happens only when the engine is hot. Cold starts always work fine. The SA told me this is actually typical of this type of problem.

I guess it really shows that with the wrong tool, a simple 10 minute DIY can turn into a 4-hour nightmare.
