40 series tires on the rear with 18" rims

Has anyone put 40 series tires in the rear with 18" rims....I know they are suppose to be 35 series...but the last car i had with 35 series tires made driving a lil uncomfortable cuz there isnt much room if u accidentally hit anything/pothole to cushion the rims. Also a friend of mine on this forum who lives close by always blows his rear tires....most recently tires he just had mounted 2 weeks ago...needless to say, he is pist. I know this will throw off the speedometer a lil too, due to the increase in over all diameter size. So having said that....just wanted to know if anyone experienced 40 series tires on 18'rims (i.e. 255/40/18 for the rear)...Thanks!

Here's the comparison between the original rear tire, the optimum for an 18" wheel and yours.

thanks for the response to my post....i guess going with 40 series with 18" rims will increase the over all diameter too much?

Yes it will, and because the tire is tall, you will need to keep a narrow wheel to prevent fender rubbing.

thanks for replying again...as u can tell im new to this forum...one last question.....well going with 40 series also make the car uneven....higher in the back and lower in the front too? I am assuming so.....i should probably just go with the specs and get 35's, Hope i dont pop them like my last 35 series tires.

doode. it's not going to make that much of a difference. If it does, just change out your spring pads to even things out.
