For me that's an easy decision- I have had 3 GS400's and don't get me wrong they are wonderful cars but I just think Benzes are the pinacle of automobiles.
Its not easy to make comparos on the cars you are thinking about since they differ in many ways. Where one car has room and 4 doors, the other is much more sporty and better looking (CLK430). Although, the fit and finish on my Lexus autos was unbelievable. MBZ just brings so much to the table; class, mystique, panache, you know all those BS words that stuck up people love to use once they get a Benz.
The CLK will out handle the Lexus but I think the GS400 is faster in the straight line 0-60 and quarter but then again it all depends on the circumstances involved: road conditions, traffic, weather, etc.
For me its all about looks and the CLK is a hot machine- and there are way too many GS's on the road but anybody can make a claim to each car either way. Now if you had asked us to compare the CLK430 to the GS430 the decision would have been the same but there are some nice adds to the GS430 not in the 400 (Upgraded Nav and Marc Levinson audio).
It really comes down to need. If you don't need to lug people around all the time, get the CLK. If you don't want a car that is soft as cow dung, get the CLK. Either way you have a decision that many would envy .

The GS has been around for a while and the style to me seems a little old, no offense. I really think the styling of CLK is amazing. I would go for the look.

Lexus LX450 (soon a Benz maybe)
Thanks for the input guys...
and yea I do mean GS400 and not 430. The only difference is a couple extra pounds of torque plus the G4 has E-shift which the 430 doesn't...

I think u shouldnt get the gs yet cuz i think they might make a new body for that soon. That body's been out for a while now....just the lights and engine is different. They already changed the ES, SC and LS recently...so thats next.

Definitely CLK430
I drove a Lexus GS430, just other day, and still there is no comparison...
1. Lexus feel like a Toyota.
2. Eventhough I like gadgets in a Lexus, it doesn't have a classy look.
3. Not the same prestige as a MB.
4. Desire and resale for MB is higher on a USED Lexus.

Once you have arrived in heaven, don't ask whether hell is better.

I'm one of the three people that voted for the Lexus. A Lexus may feel like a Toyota, but that's not a bad thing at all. Toyota makes world-class cars that never seem to die. Buy the Mercedes if that's what you want. But if you plan on keeping it after the warranty expires, buy the Lexus.
