2000 CLK430 CAB Starved for gas at higher rpms
Hey all, my brother has the above mentioned CLK and we have been trying to diagnose what we think is a fueling issue for MONTHS..... The car is being serviced at a reputable shop but they have just been guessing and throwing parts at it and hoping to get some insight or god forbid a solution.
The car starts and idles and runs FINE at low rpms but as soon as you ask for some power with I would say is anything over 1/2 throttle it just bogs..... the shop put new fuel pumps in and has said the injectors are fine, new fuel filter, the car is used regularly and has always been serviced, it has not been sitting...the only real clue I can share is that if they seal the fuel return line, the car operates properly.....
We are at a loss and the shop is telling us there are "injector pumps" in the gas tank???? And that the gas tank is possibly faulty???

What is the fuel pressure at the fuel rail at idle and 3000rpms? You can borrow a fuel pressure gauge for free from most car part stores and test from the fitting on the right front of the engine. It should be about 50psi or more all the time.

I would hope the shop checked for pressure at the rail..... They have def been trying to diagnose the fuel system as mentioned, blocking the return line cures the issue, I just cant figure out why and neither can they... They are asking for a fuel tank, I am just curious if anyone else has suffered a similar malady or had to replace the tank....
Its a nice car, its got a 115k on the clock and its a driver, but this is dealing a significant blow to its value and we are debating off loading it and moving on if we cannot resolve this issue sooner than later

Make them tell you the pressure it registers at idle and 3000rpm before continuing further. If we can determine if low fuel pressure is the issue, then there are only a few items a that can affect it significantly.
