It has done that to me. When I driveout of my house, I have a long drive where I have to drive slowly. As I get out of the gate and accelerate I find that mine fluctautes widely as it is computing your mpg based on your speed.

it analyses your driving style, then the consumption, then gives you the result of your remaining fuel based on that.
this also means that the results continuosly changes cause your driving style changes by the second. Especially when ur cruising... u get low consumption, therefore more miles left. When ur in traffic constantly accelerating, then your consumption rate is high, therefore less miles left to go!!!
You need to stop looking at that damn computer and find a gas station.
1. The computer is like a Las Vegas gamble: Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose!
2. It reads your brainwaves.
a) The upper number is what you wish/hope for.
b) The lower number represents what the Las Vegas gamble might be -- at best.
Seriously, I had a bunch of MBs, they all fluctuated.
Had also a 2001 Vette, -- same fluctuation...just don't take these inaccuracies too seriously; it's part of life, the stock market...it fluctuates...usually down the more you drive.
1) how much gas there is in the tank -- this itself isn't completely accurate, and the less gas you have, the less accurate it is, as it approaches the limits of the measuring device, and
2) it tries to guesstimate how you're driving...i.e. if you're driving more aggressively it will figure less miles per gallon.
So you can see as these two variables change so will your mpg. So if you were punching the accelerator, and now are driving more normal, your mpg will probably go up.
Or if you make a sharp turn, the sensors might think there's less gas in there as you move around.

The computer also leaves a small contingent of 1.2-1.9 gallons that it doesn't tell you about.

Is this a second gas indicator light, which comes on when the needle is on zero and computer tells you zero miles to go, when you actually have about one gallon gas left?
