Tuner Wheels

Are tuner wheels lighter than regular customs rims?
There's been some debate. BraBus v.s Lowenhart etc

Also if you go from 17'in to 18'in is lower mandatory for handling purpose or just looks?

Lowenhart isn't considered a tuner.

Brabus/Lorinser/Carlsson, those are considered tuners. But their wheels are notorious for being very very heavy.

Custom wheels, do you mean HRE? HRE wheels are custom for each car and are lightweight. BBS wheels are lightweight, but not custom.

Technically, a smaller diameter wheel is usually better. But people opt for a larger wheel for the looks. Plus, you can go wider for better grip if your car has mad amounts of torque.

If your main concern is handling/performance, get a good set of tires. Probably the best bang for buck upgrade.

Not necessarily. Modern-day forging is very complicated and light weight does not equal weak.

It used to be that multipiece was lighter, but not anymore. Brabus multipieces are pretty damn heavy heh.

just shop around, ask lee2375 for more information. He's a fountain of knowledge.

I had my eye on Lorinser RS-5. Anyone know the price and how soon will they be available? Lee maybe?

jl88, your comment about a smaller diameter wheel usually being better is kind of deceptive. In drag racing, sure a smaller wheel is better, but in road racing, larger wheels with narrower tires are optimal- look at DTM and other touring car racing series, for instance. With a larger wheel, you'll achieve more precise, responsive steering and handling.

That's why I said "technically" heh..

it all depends on the application... larger doesn't necessarily mean better either.

regardless, to answer the guy's question. Probably the best balance for looks/performance/handling would be 17 or 18" wheels.

I have 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 Brabus Monoblock III multipiece and I read in one of the tuner mags covering "buying guide to wheels" that this particular wheel weights 29 Lbs.

So if I go to 18'ins wheels without lower the springs will that reduce my handling and increase the gap between the wheel and the car?

No it will not reduce the gap. If it did, it would only do it marginally. The overall diameter of wheel+tire would still be the same compared to OEM setup wheel+tire.

You will probably need to get aftermarket shocks/springs. w208's have a nasty fender gap and it'll just look even worse with aftermarket wheels & tires.
