Multifunction Steering Wheel

Does anyone know what the four sets of buttons on the steering wheel control?

I couldn't tell you what each button does, but that picture definitely gets the "oh face"... "ohhh! ooooh!". My only gripe is the lack of a digital clock. Its bad enough if you wanna sport a nice watch you've gotta be able to understand all of that "big hand" and "little hand" mumbo-jumbo, but who wants to have to spend 2-5 seconds to decode what the time is, when digital gives you instant gratification?

N....no.. I'm just saying.. y'know.. for some of the 'slower' people out there.... shut up!

However - I do legitimately think that when driving, I'd much rather prefer to glance down at a digital clock opposed to an analog one. You wouldn't?

The four buttons probably do similar things as those on the C, E, S and new SL class.

The lower left pair cycles between "modes", the upper left cycles items within a mode.

The upper right handles audio volume and selects / deselcts items.

The lower right pair handle the cellular phone on-hook / off-hook functions.

"modes" include navigation, cd, radio, phone, car settings, trip meter/mileage, etc.

And by the way I do like analog clocks - much easier to estimate times - e.g. 4:43 - let's see, that means (60 - 43 = 17) 17 minutes before quitting time! An analog tells you instantly "about a quarter hour before quitting time".

Or maybe they don't teach "how to read an analog clock" anymore.

Of course, some people NEED to know the exact time down the minute/second/microsecond!

I remember having this argument way back when "in the old days" when digital clocks first became popular (now I'm dating myself - there was a time, long ago, when most clocks had hands and most automobile clocks were badly inaccurate)

I suppose. Still, as lazy as it sounds, I'd rather be able to quickly glance down and know what time it is instead of having to read an analog clock. I'm making reading an analog clock seem like more work than it really is, but when it comes down to it, having your eyes off the road for an extra 2 seconds every time you want to know the time increases the risks of getting into an accident, etc.

Any other opinions?

The 4 buttons are the same standard steering wheel controls as on the current CLK and other models.

Why would they put the clock all the way to the left of the dash...I'd put the analog clock somewhere in the cabin where everyone else can see (i.e. center console?)

I guess it depends what you are used to.

I think it takes me less time to comprehend an analog clock. I look at a digital clock's numbers and then have to think about what they really mean. For me it takes those extra two second to deal with a digital clock.

To each his (or her) own.

I agree on the location of the clock. I've been in cars where the passengers can't see the clock and it's a pain. Everyone is craning their heads or asking "what time is it?" My old Infiniti Q45 had a nice big ( analog ) clock in the center of the dash for all to see.

4 buttons they are pretty common in cars now.

1) volume up/down
2) channel up/down radio station that is
3) cruise control
4) telephone

i am not 100% sure about this, but from my other cars, that's what i gather.

LILRAJA,

No.

All recent Mercedes have these same buttons on the wheel (except, I believe, the SLK)

See my previous post.
