Comparison between Mercedes CLK 240 & BMW 320 Ci Coupé

German Auto magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" made a comparison between the new Mercedes CLK 240 & the BMW 320 Ci Coupé...

results:

Score: BMW 320 Ci | Mercedes CLK 240
coachwork (100): 70 | 75
driving comfort (100): 78 | 88
engine & gearing (100): 70 | 60
driving characteristics (100): 90 | 84
safety (100): 90 | 91
evaluation result (500): 398 | 398 - same for both cars!!
environment (50): 27 | 25
expense (100): 90 | 77
overall result (650): 515 | 500

1. BMW 320 Ci Coupé: Although its equal to the CLK in the evaluation result, there are slight differences: because of the lower weight, there are advantages in handling, and a lower consumption (super plus gas!). But conclusively it gets more points because of its lower price.

2. Mercedes CLK 240: The CLK offers a enjoyable joining of a 6-shift gearbox and a rpm sparing axle drive, but jerks a bit more because of the softer hanging of the engine. In weight and consumption there is space for optimizations. (The CLK is 7.000 Euro above the BMW)

The interior of both cars got very good marks.

2002 CLK 55 AMG Coupe ;)
Tnx Benny for this article.

An additional major difference is acceleration, which is over 1 second less for the CLK for many reasons.

BMW 320CI Coupe: 0-100 km = 8.6 seconds

CLK 240: 0-100 km = 9.7 seconds

how come we don't get those models. It would be nice to have more selection of engines along with diesels. Not that I care much, but i think the general mass could benefit from it. I guess in USA they want to keep a certain image and they will not import any low end models...

Maybe they took the wrong opponent... they should have taken the CLK 200 CGI against the BMW 320CI.

The Mercedes CLK 200 CGI has a R4 engine with gasoline direct injection and uses like the BMW super plus gas (98 octane)! Its acceleration from 0-100km/h: 9.2s and also has 170 HP. And another reason, it's cheaper - about 2.000 Euro cheaper than the CLK 240!

@karl k: yes, but that has been balanced out - the evaluation (?) result of both cars was 398 points - that's the summary of driving, engine, comfort and savety.

Benny, I would not know, where to look for 98 octane here in S. Florida.

My favorite second car, and rated first in the top 10 cars for 2002 by Car & Driver, is the new Acura RSX-S - 200 HP.

"The Type-S definitely has guts, with 0-to-60-mph times of just over 6 seconds, but you really need to wind out the engine to achieve this. Unlike most vehicles, the RSX is a type of sporty car that attracts a particular type of driving
enthusiast."
