New gearbox on CLK55?

Look at these two pics:

CLK55

CLK500(320)

On a steering wheel of CLK55 there are two small buttons/markers: - on the left and + on the right. That's how the shifting paddles are marked in 360, M3 and other paddle shifter cars. Does anybody know anything about a new sequential gearbox for CLK55, are there plans to make it an option for other models?

The CLK55 box is essentially the same auto box that's used on other Benzes but it has additional sequential operation from steering wheel mounted switches. The actuator switches are mounted on the back of the wheel. The + and - indicators are just there to show the driver which side is which. The same system is offered on the SL55 and I would guess will be on other AMG models as well.

It's definitely not a sequential gearbox. I believe it's the same SpeedShift automatic that's in the C32 AMG and SLK32 AMG, except that the CLK55 has steering wheel controls like the SL55 AMG while the C32/SLK32 do not.

Not sure if it will have the full manual override that the SL55 has, though. The SLK32/C32 transmissions will still automatically upshift at redline and downshift under hard braking and to prevent stalling the engine.

Brian: great info, thanks! Do you know if the gearbox on SL55 has a torque converter (Audi, Porsche tip, all Jap crap) or is it a true sequantial gearbox like on Ferrari, AM, AR, etc.?

The SL55 transmission is a regular automatic with a torque converter, similar to Steptronic/Tiptronic.

Mercedes does make a sequential manual gearbox but it is offered only on the C220 CDI sportcoupe, C200 Kompressor sportcoupe, C230 Kompressor Sportcoupe, C200 Kompressor secdan, and E240. None are available in the USA.

There are rumors that AMG is working on a sequential manual, but nothing stating when or which model it might appear in first.
