clk in the snow
Snow tires will definitely improve traction. Downsize to 16-inch will also help.
Many people told me that I should put something heavy (eg: 100 LB sand bag) in the trunk to improve traction. Then my MB service manager told me that this would accelerate the wear and tear of the rear suspension systems (???).
Anyway, once I got to where I was going, I exchanged the summer tyres for my winter set and thought I'd put them to the test. Out and went and drove around with relative ease. A little sliding here and there, as should be expected, but the wheels were getting traction with ease.
I've gone from...
Summer: Continental SportContact 2's
Winter: Bridgestone LM25's Blizzack
I didn't downgrade in size, I got like for likes, so thats 225/40/R18 on the front and 255/35/R18 on the back. All is good.
However Winter Tyres in this size are very costly and this is a premium brand, but so is smashing the hell out of your car because you have no traction and hitting a wall/another car. Your insurance might pay, but so do you in higher premiums.
