My guess is that...

The passenger side is convex (slightly curved) to show the most area where as the driver's side is not. Because the passenger side is curved, it will need a wider trim piece.

I believe its actually due to the electro-chromatic (self-dimming) feature of the driver side mirror. Both my BMW Z4 and my Volvo S60 T5 had electro-chromatic mirrors and there was a black lip over the edge of mirror glass, just like the driver side mirror on my CLK500.

The black lip should only be on the self-dimming mirror, which should be the driver side mirror. When I first noticed it on my car I thought the dealership had possibly changed out the passenger side mirror (bought my 2005 CLK500 used with 9k miles earlier this year) since it didn't match the driverside. Then after reading the owner's manual and finding out the passengerside mirror is not self-dimming, it made sense why only the driver side mirror has the black plastic housing around it. The housing is to protect the electronics and the self-dimming mechanism built into the mirror assembly.
